What Is Floor Safe: A Complete Guide

Security and protecting the item against invasion and breaches can be an alarming situation, especially with the rise in criminal activity rates in recent years. As a result, safety experts and professionals came up with a plan for securing homes and valuables with a long-lasting system. Floor safes consequently became more prominent.

A safe can be divided into three basic categories or configurations. They are the in-floor safes, the freestanding safes, and the wall or wall-mounted safes. A floor safe is a type of safe that is embedded into the floor, typically into the concrete foundation of the home (also known as a floor vault).

Floor-mounted safes are built into the concrete slab or hardwood floor of a structure. These kinds of safes offer a rock-solid depositary when fitted properly.

These safes, as their name implies, are specifically designed to be mounted into the ground-level concrete block. The makers of these types of safes strongly advise that the safe’s position be carefully considered and examined in order to optimize its potential. The best protection against theft and even natural catastrophes like floods and fires can be found in good security safe if it is installed and bolted appropriately and thoroughly.

Floor safes are classified as composite safes. Thus, they serve a dual purpose in battling robbery, fire, and flood. These safes, which are used both commercially and domestically, have been thoroughly tested against all types of burglary. The ratings that floor safes receive will also reveal the product’s cash rate.

In reality, floor-safe installations are more expensive and difficult than wall-safe installations. These safes must be installed by cutting a slab out of the ground or being drilled down by secure thick 4mm bolts.

The electronic lock is another feature of flooring safes. It makes it easier for the user to open the safe because they are no longer required to spin on a counting basis. Additionally, the floor safe’s combination can be changed as frequently as required because it’s electronic.

Benefits Of Hidden Floor Safes For Homes

If the user wishes to protect valuable belongings,  hidden home safe ideas could be a lifesaver. Installed on the floor of the home, hidden floor safes are nearly impossible for burglars to find.

These safes also have waterproof construction and fire resistance to give an extra measure of security in the event of floods or fire. The most priceless possessions will be safe from intruders, flames, and explosions when installing a hidden floor safe in the house.

  • Leaves the mind at peace- Whether at home or away, knowing that the most valuable possessions are locked in a hidden floor safe provides comfort. There will be a feeling of security knowing that the belongings are secure in the event of a break-in.
  • Saves space- Installing a hidden floor safe is a great option for people with limited space. Since the safe is positioned under the surface of the floor, it won’t take any space above the floor.
  • Burglar-resistant-  A hidden floor safe that has been placed properly is nearly impossible to breach. The possessions are protected even in the case of a fire thanks to the fire protection that these safes provide.

For someone who knows what they’re doing, installing a hidden floor safe is rather simple. Drill a 12-inch hole where the safe has to be installed to begin the process. The next step is to pour some concrete into the hole and then cover it with sand or gravel. Place the safe on the layer of gravel after that, and fill in the gaps with concrete.

Make sure the safe doesn’t stick out above the surface; if it does, robbers will be able to easily spot it. The concrete coating should then be smoothed out and allowed to dry. The ideal way to conceal a hidden floor safe is with a strategically positioned rug that is large enough to slide several inches in any direction without revealing the safe.

Putting some furniture over the safe will induce a camouflage that will be more effective but it might get harder to get to.

In buildings with post-tension slab foundations, the bottom level cannot have a hidden floor safe installed. The structural integrity of a building can be harmed by cutting or coring floors with tensioned wires below the surface. This needs to be verified before continuing with the installation.

The hidden floor safe’s weight will vary depending on its size and metal content. A modest floor safe made of 12 gauge and half-inch steel will weigh less than 80 pounds. Larger safes can weigh up to 100 pounds.

What Items Could Be Stored in Underfloor Safes?

These are typically employed in commercial settings, where only authorised workers are permitted to open the safe, but other employees are permitted to make deposits, like cash, and jewelry. The utilization of these capsules is constrained by their small size.

What Is an Underfloor Safe?

An underfloor safe is essentially just a steel box with a secure safe door at the top. The body is encased in concrete to offer the necessary amount of security because the body cannot provide much defence on its own.

Floorboard safes, which are located between the joists in the space between a floor and ceiling, should not be confused with underfloor safes. Since they are just fastened to joists, they are essentially tin boxes and are simple to remove. Consequently, a floorboard safe is inappropriate for insurance purposes. The underground safe door is typically spherical, and as the safe’s quality rises, so does the thickness of the door plate (the top part), increasing security. The diameter of these circular lids, which is roughly 140mm (5.5″), prevents the storage of bulky objects.

The door is lowered into the safe’s neck, which rises up from the body, locking the lid into the solid portion of the safe.

The body of the safe would need to be excavated with a jackhammer to a depth where the top opening fits flush with the floor level since it needs to be buried into concrete on an existing solid floor. Not all solid flooring is appropriate since a hole of about 500mm square is needed.

Given that it is a key component of the safe’s primary defence, the concrete mix used to surround it is not ordinary. As a result, a legitimate installer should install these safes to ensure that the concrete complies with the manufacturer’s specifications.

Any insurance coverage could be void if the safe is improperly installed. If there is enough space underneath the floor where the safe will be located, shutters can be built to create a box in which the safe will sit, and concrete can then be poured around it. Shuttering can also be used to create an above-ground enclosure for the same purpose. High cash rating safes also come with a steel mesh that is embedded into the concrete around the safe’s neck to strengthen the floor and increase its defence against intrusion.

Different Underfloor Safes

The door (safe lid), which for the majority of safes is a 14mm round diameter opening, is the primary point of entry for an underfloor safe. It is possible to find rectangular safe doors in lower-quality underfloor safes, but these have generally not been as popular due to the risk of the lid jamming when being removed or reinstalled. Some manufacturers have found a solution for this by utilizing a gas strut to make the lid hinge from one corner; however, this limits the amount of space that may be opened completely.

Deposit underfloor safes also come with a tube that may be used to drop a capsule inside the safe.

A high-security double-bitted key lock would be used to secure a typical under-the-floor safe. Additionally, a mechanical combination lock may be installed, however, these are difficult to use, especially when the safe needs to be opened by crouching or lying flat on the ground. For these safes, battery-operated digital locks are also an option. However, the quality of the battery may be impacted if the safe is installed in a moist or cold environment.
