Every person wants to keep their prized possessions at the safest place possible. Because no matter how much we earn and how rich we are, some things are priceless and difficult to replace. This accounts for all your bonds, insurances, antique pieces of jewelry, or maybe your family inheritances.

Home safes are the best option available out there because they provide satisfaction and security. So, if you have decided to go for a home safe installation, you need to begin by understanding the types of home safes available in the market. These types are discussed below.

Based on the place of installation, there are three types of safes:

1. Floor/Wall/Fixed Safes:

These safes are generally attached to the floor, a wall, or fixed at a certain possible and safe place with the help of nut bolts. These types of safes act as an efficient document safe for home

Floor safes are embedded onto the floor which makes them difficult to be removed. The only drawback of these safes is that the lower part which is in touch with the floor can get rusted or corroded over time but preventive measures can be adopted to prevent this.

Wall safes are attached or concreted onto the wall and they are more convenient to keep

important documents that are required more often than not. The standalone safes are made heavy so that they can be kept at a place rather than fitting them on or over a surface. Usually, these have a combination of digital and manual locks for more assurance; however, safes with only one type of lock or a combination of two or more locks are also available.

2. Underground Safes:

These safes are buried under the ground and to increase the level of security, they are encased in concrete. They have a top opening and they may or may not be fire-resistant. Nowadays, water-resistant underground safes are also available in the market.

3. In-Wall Safes:

Safes that are fitted inside of a wall and not on the wall are known as in-wall safes. These are concealed inside of a wall and are available with several types of lock systems.

All the other bases of classification of safes are derived from this basis of classification only and include these safes only. So, the basis of the place of installment can be treated as the major pointer in the division of safes. However, the other two bases are:

Based on the protection offered, safes are of two types:

  1. Fire-Resistant Safes
  2. Burglary-Resistant Safes

Based on objects secured, safes are of two types:

  1. Gun Safes
  2. Jewelry and Cash Safes

Best Places to Put Home Safe

Since every house is unique in its way, no place could be said to be the perfect location or to guarantee 100% safety for installing a home safe. Still, there are a few of the most reliable locations which are suggested below depending on the principal type of protection the safe is believed to serve.

Burglary-Resistant Safes

Try to find a place which is the most ignored or which remains a mess most of the time such as a storeroom, a place where all the extra items of your house are kept. Do not aim for plain areas with a direct view. It is better if you use in-wall safes for extra protection and even if you use the heavy, floor, or wall-mounted safes, keep them at a low-key place. You can even cover that place with a piece of furniture or have the safe installed inside of a drawer to add another layer of covering.

Fire-Resistant Safes

While the fire is the second biggest threat after the theft, it is ideal to install this kind of money safe box for home at a corner. This is because when two walls meet to form a corner, the thickness of the wall increases and thus, makes it more fire-resistant. It can even be installed inside of a wall or bolted to an external wall.

Try to install these safes, on the ground floor, if there are multiple floors in your house. This is because when the heat rises, it causes more damage to the upper floor rather than to the ground or first floor. Avoid areas like kitchen, garages, and others where inflammable items are kept.

These safes are known as fire-proof but we need to keep in mind that no safe offers complete protection against fire thus, focus on ways to make it as fire-resistant as possible by choosing the right location.

Flood-Proof Safes

The third major threat could be flooding. In areas that flood frequently, the safes should be installed above the ground level, at least one or two feet higher than the ground. Building a steel or concrete base to support the safe is advisable to make it even more resistant to water.

Just as in the case of fire-proof safes, waterproof safes also do not guarantee complete protection from moisture hence, it is good to store your documents and other items in a waterproof container, even inside a safe.

Important things to keep in mind while home safe installation:

  • There should not be a piping system or electric wires at the place where you are installing the safe
  • Always check if the wall can bear the weight of the safe you are putting it on
  • Avoid a humid or damp place and master bedroom for keeping them safe
  • Anchor your safe to the ground; concrete floors are better for anchoring than wooden floors.

Installation Steps in Detail

Installing a safe is no rocket science but it is not a piece of cake either. Every safe comes with an installation manual and simple tools are also required for installing the safes. Prepare the area before putting the safe. Below, we have discussed how to install a home safe in detail.

Installing Floor/Wall/Fixed/Standalone Safes

These are generally the easiest to install. For floor safes, concrete floors are best as they ensure more security but these can also be installed onto wooden floors. To install these safes, firstly put the safe over the desired location, open the door of the safe, and take the marking of the bolts that are already present. Next, take a drill machine and drill accordingly. Now, you have to place the safe over the marked position, fix the bolts in place, and tighten them to secure the safe at the place.

Installing An Underground Safe

It is a bit complex. Firstly, the concrete floor needs to be dug and a hole, double the size of the safe, needs to be excavated. Put a concrete mix to half of the length of the hole. Do not overfill it as it will make it protrude out of the ground.

Once it dries, lower the safe into the hole and again fill the gaps on the sides with concrete mix without disturbing the safe’s position. The safe should be on a level with the floor. Let it dry completely.

Installing An In-Wall Safe

For these types of safes, a wall cavity is needed where the safe is placed. This begins with the selection of an apt size of safe for the wall cavity where the safe is to be installed. Nowadays, the option of custom home safe is also available which makes it easier to fit in every place.

Put the vault with the door open in the cavity and take the markings of the stud holes. Drill and put the bolts in place. Before tightening the screws make sure that everything is in place and the doors are firmly closing.

Conclusion

Safes or vaults provide a level of security and self-satisfaction but there are plenty of things to consider before deciding to install a safe like the type of safe, where to put a safe box at home, and others.
