Before dealing with the question of how to move a safe, we need to know the different types of gun safes so that we can prepare for their removal carefully and in a unique and safe manner.

On The Basis of Size:

The gun safes are available in several sizes. For rifles, one will require a long gun safe to store all the rifles properly. Similarly, handguns can be organized and stored in a small gun safe. Thus, depending on the size or collection of the gun safes, one can decide which gun safe will be the best suited to their requirements.

On The Basis of Locks:

Gun safes come with a variety of lock options. One can get a fingerprint or biometric lock system, key lock system, electronic lock system, or even a combination lock system. A fingerprint lock system is a safer option since it requires biometric data. However, electronic gun safes with a number pad to enter a passcode is also one of the most widely accepted lock systems by customers. Dual lock systems are the safest of all.

On The Basis of Properties:

There are various gun safes with specific features available like some of them offer fireproof or fire-resistant rating, others may offer water-resistant or waterproof capability. Depending on the properties which these safes may possess, gun safes can be waterproof, burglary proof, pry-resistant, fireproof gun safes, or a combination of all these.

One can always go for a custom gun safe in order to get specific features added to the security and other properties of the gun safe.

On The Basis of The Place of Installation:

Different people have different preferences for the installation spot of their gun safes. Some want to keep it attached to the floor whereas others want to hide it someplace. Hence, depending on the place of installation, gun safes can be in wall gun safe, under bed gun safe, hidden gun safe, corner gun safe, or floor gun safe.

Inwall gun safes are mounted inside of a wall cavity and secured by bolts. These safes are on the level of the wall and one can easily hide them behind a piece of painting or any other wall article. Under-bed gun safes are specifically designed to be placed in a form of a sliding drawer or gun safe cabinet under your bed so that one can retrieve the guns easily without getting out of bed.

Hidden gun safes do not look like a safe themselves, rather they look like a piece of furniture. They can be hidden in a mirror or cupboard. They are generally less safe but good at deceiving thieves and other people. Corner gun safes are manufactured in a way that they can be fitted only in the corners.

Vehicle Gun Safe:

These are meant to secure the guns inside of a vehicle. In the case of car gun safes, handgun gun safes are the most famous which are used to securely store a single handgun. Similarly, there are gun safes available for trucks also. They could be in the form of single handgun storage safe or even rifle storage safe.

There are options for a custom gun safe too that will depend on the specifications of your vehicle and your gun collection.

Before learning how to move a large gun safe, it is crucial to do some preparations in advance which would help us to have a better idea of all the things we might require or the difficulties which we might face while moving a gun safe.

  • The first step is planning the location where you want to relocate the gun safe. Take the measurements of the gun safe which will help you to decide the location better.
  • Next, we need to plan the entire route and mark all the spots which might become an obstacle in carrying the safe to the final destination. Clear the path between the two spots. If there is a staircase in a way, make sure it is sturdy enough. Empty all the contents from the gun safe and store them safely in one single place.
  • Essential tools and things such as a dolly or loading ramp, straps, thick blankets, and stretch wrap will be required. You can either buy them or rent them. Arrange them accordingly. The measurements taken earlier will aid you in choosing the right dolly. If there are 2-3 people to help, the work would get easier.
  • Wear good anti-slip slippers or shoes and thick gloves with a good grip so that you can easily carry the safe without slipping anywhere. If the safe is moving to an entirely new destination and not within the same home or place, choose a vehicle that can safely carry the gun safe.

Once the pre-planning is done, it is time to focus on the actual question: how to move a heavy safe?

  • Firstly, lock up the gun safe and wrap it with those thick blankets. Tape them for extra safety so that they won’t fall off in the middle of the path or you would stumble upon them.
  • Secondly, take the help of someone, tilt the safe but be extra careful. Place the dolly underneath it and secure it with the straps and ropes that are provided. This is the most important step.
  • Next, move the dolly to the desired place and again, tilt the safe slowly and carefully while one removes the dolly and puts it safely onto the place. Unwrap the blankets and voila! you are done.

If you want to move a safe downstairs, then a heavy appliance dolly will be required. Repeat the first two steps. After that, two people should be positioned ahead of the vault and one on the behind to guide and direct. For moving upstairs, follow these steps in a reverse manner.
